Rhiwbina 10  Fairwater 5 (Sun 7th Feb 2010 - Home)

We were short of a number of players today, with a bare 16 turning up for duty against Fairwater. We were also without regular coaches Mie & Rob, but thankfully Ade Herald and Paul Warren stepped into the breach. Lack of a front row men meant that we had to play the game with passive scrums.

Ade and Paul worked on a few moved in the warm up session, which turned out to be a match winner – within 5 minutes of kick off Josh Moore fed quick ball from the base of a scrum, which ended up in the hands of Alex Lane playing in the centre. Alex hit the gas and scorched over for a fine try which was converted by Jordan Francombe.

Fairwater responded with a try of their own, which they failed to convert. James Herald crossed the line with ball in hand but unfortunately the try was disallowed. Rhiwbina led 7 to 5 at the break.

The second half saw both sides stepping up the pressure, but some stout defending from both teams kept the scores from moving. Rhiwbina found a second wind with just 5 minutes to go and made several determined thrusts at the Fairwater try line.

Tom Warren breached their defence, but for a second time a Rhiwbina try was ruled out. With seconds left on the clock, Rhiwbina were awarded a penalty, which was slotted over by Jordan.

Man of the Match: James Herald (No. 8).

Final score Rhiwbina 10 Fairwater 5.

Caerphilly 7 Rhiwbina 36 (Sun 8th Nov 2009 - Away)

Today’s game started with a spot of housework from Caerphilly – brushing surface water from the pitch.

It was brilliant to see a virtual turn out – of the 22 players in the squad, 20 players turned out, and an injured Ben Mc turned up to support. The boys were ready to put the lessons learned from our training sessions into practice. Within the first 5 minutes Alex Lane romped over the line from a good distance out, and Tom punched the conversion between the posts, into the garden of a neighbouring house.

Caerphilly re-started with a new ball, and Adam Champ and Jack Marshall made a welcome return to the team, both making their presence well and truly felt. Caerphilly would have preferred it if they’d both still been injured!

Caerphilly were well and truly in the game, and scored and converted a good try. Just before half time the forwards secured the ball a few meters short of Caerphilly’s goal line. The ball was smartly moved out to the backs, who moved it well along the line to put Crabbie over the line in the corner. It was fantastic to see the ball being taken at speed. The first half ended Caerphilly 7 Rhiwbina 12.

It’s fair to say that Rhiwbina were up for the first half, but the second half saw an even more determined Rhiwbina take to the field. Unfortunately Jack Allwood had to be subbed as he had an injury. Enter Josh Moore as fullback. Jack Marshall showed his usual skill and determination and scored a well deserved try in the opening stages.

Rhiwbina continued to pile on the pressure, but Caerphilly defended well. A penalty was awarded to Rhiwbina for a high tackle on Jack Marshall. Max Wilson took a quick tap and sharp as a gazelle (well, a gazelle with a large bottom according to his mother) stormed over the line. Caerphilly 7 Rhiwbina 22.

Jordan Francombe put in a fine performance at outside half and was rewarded woith a fine try, which he also converted.

The dying minutes of the game saw Rhiwbina seal the victory with a fantastic try worked between Will Juniper and Adam Champ. Great support and passing between the pair, saw Champie score towards the corner. Crabbie ended the game by converting a difficult kick.

It was a pleasure to nip over the mountain and play Caerphilly, who were down to reduced numbers through injury, but still made a real game of it. A match between 2 quality, disciplined sides, with quality refereeing.

Final Score Caerphilly 7 Rhiwbina 36

Rhiwbina 19  Cricc 10 (Sun 18th Oct 2009 - Home)

After an extremely disappointing couple of weeks with results not going our way, the boy’s confidence was very low. This was a must win game. Team Manager Steve Juniper gave a very thoughtful speech before the game in an attempt to give the boys the confidence and belief that they needed.

They started the game as if they really meant it, and played extremely well as a team right from the start. The defensive play was exceptional throughout with very few missed tackles.

Rhiwbina deservedly took the lead when Will Juniper pounced on a knock on from CRICC and with a bit of fancy footwork, sped to the try line and scored under the posts. Tom calmly slotted over the conversion.

Rhiwbina had to defend desperately throughout the first half with CRICC camped on their line for lengthy periods of play.

Rhiwbina took the 7-0 lead into half time.

The second half went just as well as the first with the boys really playing well as a team. Nathan Salmon scored Rhiwbina’s second try with a fantastic run beating half of the CRICC team in the process. Tom kicked the conversion to make the score 14-0.

CRICC hit back with a try of their own and the score became 14-5. Will Juniper put all of the supporters at ease with his second try of the game.

CRICC scored a consolation try right in the very, very corner of the pitch to make the final score 19-10 in Rhiwbina’s favour.

It was a game Rhiwbina full deserved to win and a game in which every single player contributed to. No game next week but we’ll be taking on Llandaff at home in a fortnight.

Rhiwbina 17  Cowbridge 48 (Sun 4th Oct 2009 - Home)

On an unusual sunny day at Caedelyn we took on a Cowbridge Team which over the years saw even games.
Because of a lack of recognised forwards we played non contested scrums.
This was also a first for our newly qualified referee Dave Reynolds. Considering this was Dave’s first game he handled it in a very professional fashion.

True to tradition the fist ten minutes saw an equally lively start from both teams.

All of a sudden we forgot that if the opponent had the ball we had to tackle which led to Cowbridge reaching a score line at half time to Rhiwbina 0 Cowbridge 31

The second half started as the first half finished and soon Cowbridge were leading 0 – 43.

At last some good handling movements from the backs saw Josh Moore score in the corner. Ben Crabbe just missed the difficult conversion.

Another good flowing movement saw Ben Crabbe score an unconverted try.

From the kick off Cowbridge scored another try which went unconverted.

A great run by Jordon Francombe whose pass to Dan Shortland enabled him to score under the posts.
Jake Bartlett added the points.

Another fine run by Tom Warren was stopped short just under the posts.

In all, not a very satisfying day for Rhiwbina but some good movements showed we have the potential to play and win.
Our major fault from the majority of players was the lack of tackling. This area of our play must improve.

Final score: Rhiwbina 17 Cowbridge 48.

Cardiff and Vale U14's District Selection - 25th Sept 2009

Congratulations to Jack Marshall and Adam Champ on being selected to represent the District.

Rumney 40  Rhiwbina 10 (Sun 20th Sept 2009 - Away)

For the first game of the 2009-2010 season, Rhiwbina took on Rumney on a sunny September Sunday morning.

Rumney started the match extremely well and looked very threatening with ball in hand. However, some decent defence and extremely strong scrummaging from the forwards kept Rumney at bay early on.

Rumney, having played two matches already this season, and having adapted well to the new rules, scored two tries in quick succession to put Rhiwbina on the back foot.

A further try followed and Rumney looked to be the far superior side leading 19-0.

However, Rhiwbina came back into the game later on in the first half. With a scrummage constantly going forward, the backs were rewarded with quick ball. They made use of this with good runs from Alex Lane and Tom Warren.

Tom slotted over a penalty to get Rhiwbina on the score board.

Soon after, Rhiwbina got what they deserved with a try by wing Will Juniper. Will pounced on a knock on by a Rumney player and hacked the ball towards the try line and dived over.

So at half time, things looked reasonably promising for Rhiwbina, still trailing however at 19-10.

Rhiwbina came out all guns blazing in the 2nd half and came so close to scoring on many occasions. Alex Lane penetrated the Rumney defence and at times was almost unstoppable!
However, Rhiwbina failed to cross the line, and Rumney made them pay with a try against the run of play.

Two further tries followed to Rumney and they ended up winning by the flattering score of 40-10.

Overall it was a decent performance by the boys, and something to build on for the rest of the season.
